How much does dental scaling cost? Does it hurt?

Dental scaling is a procedure to remove tartar (calculus) from the tooth surface and between the teeth using dental instruments, because tartar cannot come off on its own. If left untreated, it may lead to problems such as gum disease, bad breath, and tooth decay.

In general, dental scaling can be done using the following methods:

  • Hand scaling: Uses sharp, pointed instruments to scrape tartar from the tooth surface or along the gumline. This is suitable when tartar buildup is mild or in areas that are easy to reach.
  • Ultrasonic scaling: Uses high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations to break up tartar. It is effective for thick, long-standing tartar deposits. Water flows through the instrument tip to help cool the area and flush away debris during the procedure.

What is tartar (calculus), and how does it form?

Tartar is hardened plaque—made from bacteria and food debris—that mixes with saliva and minerals in the mouth. Over time, if it is not properly cleaned away, it hardens and sticks to the teeth and along the gumline.

Why do we need dental scaling?

Dental scaling is an important part of oral care. The reasons we need it include:

  1. Prevent gum disease – Tartar harbors bacteria that can cause inflammation and gum disease, such as gingivitis and periodontitis. Scaling reduces bacteria and helps prevent gum problems.
  2. Prevent loose teeth and tooth loss – Long-term tartar buildup can weaken the gums and supporting bone, which may cause teeth to become loose and eventually lead to tooth loss.
  3. Improve oral health and freshen breath – Tartar buildup can contribute to bad breath. Scaling helps your breath feel fresher.
  4. Make daily cleaning easier – Once tartar is removed, brushing and flossing become easier and more effective because you can clean the tooth surface and gumline better.

Steps of dental scaling

Step 1: Oral examination
The dentist will carefully examine your teeth and gums using a dental mirror to assess tartar buildup and check for other oral health issues.

Step 2: Scaling
The dentist removes tartar using hand instruments and/or an ultrasonic scaler to clean tartar and bacterial deposits from the tooth surface and under the gumline.

Step 3: Polishing
After scaling, the dentist may polish the teeth using a rotating brush and polishing paste to reduce roughness and smooth the tooth surface.

Step 4: Flossing
The dentist may floss to check tight contacts and areas along the gumline. A small amount of bleeding can occur.

Step 5: Fluoride application
In some cases, fluoride may be applied (painted on or brushed on) to help protect and strengthen teeth after scaling.

Step 6: Follow-up appointment
A follow-up visit may be scheduled to reassess your oral health and determine whether additional scaling is needed in the future.

Who should not have dental scaling?

In general, most people should have dental scaling every 6 months. However, if you have a condition related to blood clotting, you should inform your dentist beforehand, and the condition should be controlled/stable before the procedure.

  • People with bleeding disorders or those taking blood thinners, because there is a risk of excessive bleeding or bleeding that is difficult to stop
  • Patients with hemophilia or Von Willebrand disease, which are genetic conditions affecting blood clotting
  • Patients with very low platelet counts due to dengue fever, leukemia, or kidney disease
  • Patients with liver cirrhosis from hepatitis, alcohol use, or autoimmune causes, which may be associated with abnormal bleeding in the digestive tract or elsewhere

Pregnant women can have dental scaling. However, if the pregnancy is beyond 3 months, they should consult the dentist first for the safety of both mother and baby.

People with conditions that may flare up during scaling—such as certain heart conditions—may experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or palpitations. The ultrasonic scaler’s vibrations could potentially trigger irregular heartbeats in some cases, so the dentist should evaluate this first.

Benefits of dental scaling

Dental scaling is a routine part of oral care and should be done regularly to prevent future problems. Benefits include:

  • Helps prevent gum disease such as gingivitis and periodontitis, which is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults
  • Reduces gum inflammation and bleeding—removing tartar under the gumline can reduce swelling and bleeding when brushing
  • Helps prevent cavities by reducing plaque and tartar buildup near the roots, which can contribute to tooth decay
  • Improves oral hygiene—a cleaner mouth means less bad breath and more effective brushing and flossing
  • May support overall health—good oral health may help lower risks related to systemic conditions such as heart disease and diabetes
  • Makes teeth look cleaner and healthier, which can boost confidence in your smile

How much does dental scaling cost?

Service Price (THB)
Regular scaling (Cleaning, Scaling & Polishing) + Free fluoride application 1,000–1,500
Scaling for gingivitis (Gingivitis treatment) + Free fluoride application 1,500–2,000

Note: The prices above are only preliminary estimates. Actual costs may vary depending on the patient’s oral condition, the dentist’s treatment plan, and any clinic promotions available at that time.

Aftercare tips after dental scaling

  • Avoid strongly flavored foods (very spicy, very sour, very salty) because they may increase tooth sensitivity
  • Avoid hard or sticky foods to reduce irritation to the gums and teeth
  • Avoid smoking for at least 72 hours after scaling, as it may slow healing
  • If you have sensitivity, use a toothpaste for sensitive teeth. It should improve in 3–4 days; if not, consult your dentist
  • If your gums bleed, it should not last longer than 1 hour. If bleeding is heavy or abnormal, contact your dentist promptly
  • If you feel gum pain or swelling during the first 1–2 days, dissolve 1 teaspoon of salt in 1 glass of warm water and rinse 3–4 times a day to help reduce inflammation
  • Watch for signs of inflammation or pus from the gums—if present, see a dentist as soon as possible
  • Monitor any other unusual symptoms; if something feels off, consult your dentist

FAQs about dental scaling

Does dental scaling hurt?

During scaling, you may feel some discomfort or slight bleeding, which is normal—especially if there is a lot of tartar or if the gums are inflamed. In some cases, the dentist may use local anesthesia to reduce discomfort.

Can I have dental scaling if I have a loose tooth?

The dentist must evaluate the cause of the looseness first. It depends on the diagnosis.

How long does dental scaling take?

Dental scaling typically takes about 30 minutes to 1 hour, depending on how much tartar has built up and the patient’s oral health.

Is bleeding during scaling normal?

A small amount of bleeding during scaling is normal, especially when the gums are inflamed. Scaling helps reduce gum disease risk and supports the gums returning to a healthier state. If bleeding is heavy or continues for a long time after scaling, consult a dentist.

Can dental scaling help reduce bad breath?

Yes. Scaling can help reduce bad breath because tartar and plaque are reservoirs for bacteria that can cause unpleasant odor. Removing them helps keep the mouth cleaner and reduces bacterial buildup, which is one cause of bad breath.

Dental scaling isn’t just about a cleaner look—it’s one of the easiest ways to prevent gum problems before they get serious.
